Promoting international opportunities in education

CILL engages with policy-makers at all levels to advocate recognition of the importance and added value of international experience to young people’s education and employability, and to make the case for increased funding. CILL is a founding member of the UK Global Alliance (formerly British Council Internationalism Alliance).

Our information and networking service, InterCom, provides a focal point for anyone involved or interested in international education, cultural and youth projects.

Advocacy and action

Young people in the UK deserve the same right to life-changing opportunities as their peers in other countries. Schools, colleges and youth organisations need professional links with other countries. Charities and NGOs want to be able to host volunteers and interns from overseas, enlivening the communities in which they work. Recent changes in government policy have drastically reduced access to these opportunities. Therefore, with partners across the UK and in other countries, we are working to encourage new approaches to organising and funding international projects, beginning with local, city-to-city or regional initiatives.

We also offer strategic and practical advice to public, private or third sector bodies wanting to support international projects for the benefit of young people in their city or region.

CILL continues to support those who are campaigning for the UK’s re-entry to Erasmus Plus (including e-Twinning) and the European Solidarity Corps.

Information and networking

Many forward-thinking people and organisations remain committed to giving young people greater access to international opportunities. In order to provide a rallying-point, we have set up InterCom, a forum for sharing information and knowledge on education, cultural and youth projects. InterCom will operate as an open platform where members can find out about policy developments, coordinate activities, promote opportunities and celebrate success. In addition to its website, InterCom will offer a regular series of webinars and other events on topics relating to various aspects of international education.

  • If a young person wants to feel empowered to inspire change, meet others and make a difference, they should be involved in international exchanges; they provide life skills unmatchable by any other programme.

    Allie, UK

  • I started from a small place with no real direction in life. My international journey increased my confidence to overcome difficulties, respond to challenges and focus on what I wanted to achieve in the years ahead. I gained skills and experience that will be invaluable throughout my entire life.

    Elena, North Macedonia

  • The human spirit really is not about countries but about people. I learned a lot about myself – some of it good, some of it not. The person that went out was not the same as the one that came back.

    Steve, teacher, UK

  • The seminar was an excellent opportunity to understand different policy areas and priorities across Europe. Well organised, with a good range of discussion. We had a really good opportunity to create new ideas. Your work is amazing and professional.

    Michael, educator, UK
